Californian Heath Authorities are concerned over the Reproductive/development Toxicity of methyl alcohol, methanol (H3COH)

OEHHA set a maximum daily dose level for it in California commencing July 2013.

Aspartame’s Methanol falls foul of the new regulation.

Methanol is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals. It is a severe metabolic toxin for humans. Anyone handling pure is subject to strict Occupational Health (OHSA) regulations, the key messages being Don’t drink it - Don’t breath it in – Don’t get it on your skin (i)

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) must be available to anyone receiving or handling methanol, which outlines the dangers and safety requirements of handling & processing methanol.

Methanol is also present in minute quantities in some foods, fruits, dark red wines, etc, but is harmless since it is always counterbalanced by ethanol, (H5C2OH) which is the natural antidote. We suffer no adverse effects from methanol from these sources because we are protected by nature. Methanol in nature also binds to pectin and safely takes it out of your body.

Pure Methanol was identified by the National Toxicity programme (NTP) in 2003 as causing potential Developmental Toxicity in humans and was added to the Californian Prop 65 chemical list as a risk. Subsequently the Californian Health Authority (OEHHA) decided the risk was sufficient to set its own Maximum Allowable Dose Limit (MADL) for non natural methanol consumption in California at 23mg per day.

A significant source of such methanol in our food today is consumption of the artificial sweetener aspartame and its derivatives (iii). The amount of aspartame we consume is set by the FDA for aspartame at 50mg/kg, 50 milligrams per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight. Methanol is 10% of the aspartame molecule, so the amount of methanol consumed by a 70kg adult can be up to 350mg per day 15 times the limit for California.

The Authorities- FDA and OEHHA cannot both be right since the great differences in their consumption limits is very disturbing, clearly this has implications on the safety of aspartame and must be resolved.

Aspartame has never been universally accepted as safe in spite of FDA assurances to the contrary. It is FDA’s responsibility to demonstrate to the American people that the amount of methanol they have been consuming in aspartame is demonstrably safe and no lasting health risk.

Concern over the methanol in aspartame is being reconsidered in Europe. EFSA has postponed its final Opinion on aspartame safety from June to November 2013, so they can consider new information challenging the ADI of aspartame. Campaigners claim the current ADI (40mg/kg) is 35 times too high and have the evidence to prove it.

This is a serious position for Americans to be in. Citizens must be concerned at the high methanol foods on their shelves, and will be wonder why they are not protected, as are Californians. These questions are URGENT and must be addressed by FDA immediately. This is not a question for the aspartame industry which has been hiding the real danger from methanol and are fully aware of its severe toxicity in humans. It is for the authorities to settle in the first place.

Erring on the side of caution, it is only fair that the FDA and OEHHA inform the American people of the position so they may choose whether to consume aspartame/methanol in artificial sweeteners.


The big question that arises with Prop 65 is whether aspartame enters the blood stream. The entire molecule of aspartame as such does not but once anyone consumes it the components do. In one case, a heavy user of aspartame died and his autopsy said acute methanol poisoning and chronic methanol poisoning. Dr. H. J. Roberts in explaining about the addiction said the methyl ester immediately becomes free methyl alcohol, which is a narcotic and causes chronic methanol poisoning. This affects the brain’s dopamine system causing addiction.

Dr. James Bowen explained: "Only after longer aspartame usage does liver damage cause blood methanol levels to measurably rise because the mitochondria in the liver are so damaged that it no longer quickly processes either methyl or ethyl (drink) alcohol. Then acute methanol poisoning is directly determined from lab results as the blood methanol level elevates. This sequence or "toxic axis" begins with your very first dose of aspartame. Both acute and chronic poisonings from this methanol toxic axis steadily accumulate in the aspartame consumer.

In this particular case the wife was indicted even though she passed 3 lie detector tests and has remained in prison 12 years. Physicians wrote affidavits that her husband died from the methanol in aspartame. There are other cases and even people getting DUIs because of the methanol. Matthew Hobson got a DUI although never drinking enough alcohol, but large amounts of diet pop. A study, Artificial Sweeteners Speed Alcohol Into Blood explained. Methanol in aspartame can be considered in a DUI. Dr. Chris Rayner and colleagues at Royal Adelaide Hospital studied eight healthy male volunteers. Rayner said, “The findings have public health significance. He recommended that product labeling include information on the intoxicating qualities of artificially sweetened alcoholic drinks. There could be legal implications for those driving home, as well.”

Aspartame may be listed as an additive but it is masquerading as such. In reality it is a deadly, chemical poison, literally an addictive, excitoneurotoxic, carcinogenic, genetically engineered drug and adjuvant that damages the mitochondria and interacts with drugs and adjuvant. The FDA listed 92 symptoms including death and blindness from over ten thousand volunteered complaints by aspartame consumers. The National Soft Drink Association registered a long protest against FDA approval of aspartame, which is found in the 5/7/1985 Senate Congressional Record. It was approved anyway, the cash registers rang a merry tune, and the world has been poisoned by this recognized toxin. Dr. Russell Blaylock, a neurosurgeon, author of "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills" said in a lecture, "Understand the reactions from aspartame are not allergic but toxic like arsenic and cyanide." How bad is it? Dr. Mario Alemany did the Trocho Study and I visited him in Barcelona. He told me: "Aspartame will kill 200 million people." I have taken 50,000 case histories of aspartame sick and dying. Once having used this poison you can be chemically hypersensitive for life. See the movie, "Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World" and the Code Blue case where an aspartame victim was accidentally given Crystal Light and had to be resuscitated to save her life. The Trocho Study: showed how the formaldehyde converted from the methyl alcohol embalms living tissue and damages DNA. This will destroy humanity. Observe the formaldehyde in the tissues. Formaldehyde turns the tissues to plastic, a discussion in Dr. Monte's new book, “While Science Sleeps A Sweetener Kills”. Take warning from the opening words of Chapter 1:

Something very wrong is going on. Something that is killing good people and causing untold suffering to families and communities around the world. In the past 30 years, a group of diseases has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and other countries. These afflictions, often collectively referred to as diseases of civilization (DOC), include multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, melanoma and autism, a once rare birth defect. Because the incidence of these diseases has increased gradually over three decades, we are inclined to accept this as a natural if unfortunate, part of modern life. But such a lethal trend is not natural, the changes that we have witnessed over the last generation are unprecedented in the history of medical science.

Dr. Monte shows the root of this worldwide plague is aspartame! His evidence is incontrovertible. Many other renowned physicians have authored entire bookshelves of scientific exposition on the fatal toxicity of this deadly sugar substitute. By containing free methyl alcohol victims have the afflictions it causes.

Aspartame causes neural tube defects from the methanol. The original American manufacturer, G. D. Searle Co., made a deal with the FDA to never allow the public to see the teratology studies. Jeanette Soto, Mission Possible Brookville, Florida who wrote “Blinded Sight” when her husband lost his sight from the methanol in aspartame was unable to get her father-in-law, diabetic, off aspartame because of addiction. When Jeanette’s father-in-law, Santiago Echiverria, died it had to be a closed casket, the formaldehyde from the free methyl alcohol was oozing out of his skin.

Ophthalmologist and specialist in methanol toxicity, the late Dr. Morgan Raiford said, “When this drug enters the digestive tract, largely the upper portion, this ASPARTAME molecule spins off a by-product known as METHANOL or METHYL ALCOHOL. This product enters the blood stream and when these portions reach the highly metabolic region of the OPTIC NERVE AND RETINA, PARTIAL ATROPHY CAN AND DOES TAKE PLACE.” He also wrote: “This product Aspartame should be withdrawn from the market place and not for human use until the TOXIC METHYL ALCOHOL radical has been eliminated. Methyl alcohol has no place in a product, whole or in part, to be allowed to be produced by any manufacturer for human usage.”
