Thank you for writing back. I'm glad to hear you are concerned. However, one candy bar is not going to tell you anything. After Mars told me aspartame was in the Mars Bars under natural flavors (completely unlabeled) I decided to see for myself. Indeed I immediately got a terrible headache and felt bad all day, so even if I hadn't asked I would have known it had aspartame because, of course, it was poisoned. What does that tell you about methanol? Nothing. The headache is probably due to the whole chemical mess.
Donna, there are certain things in this world that are known and you no longer have to prove. Methanol is classified as a narcotic and is a severe metabolic poison. You need to eat a candy bar to tell that?
I don't have to prove to anybody the sky is blue, there are trees that are green and water is wet. Neither does anyone have to prove that methanol is a severe metabolic poison, and particularly because it's free and unbound is deadly to anyone who puts it in their mouth. It has already been proven that methanol converts to formaldehyde. That's what California Prop 65 is all about - that any product that has methanol and/or formaldehyde should have a cancer warning before coming into the State of California. It's a quick way to get manufacturers to take it out.
I sent you an excellent article yesterday on aspartame gum, as it told, free methyl alcohol going right into the blood stream. You know what that means, don't you? Aspartame is a drug just masquerading as an additive, one of the reasons it interacts with drugs.
Donna, its been on the market for 3 decades due to the power and influence of the manufacturers. They knew it was a cash cow since it's so addictive. Millions of articles declare the toxicity and let's the world know about the methyl alcohol. It's a done deal. You don't have to eat a candy bar to find out. Now Paul Turner made the deal to approve aspartame in England through a business deal. No studies were done. Food Standards can do Europe a favor, and make it healthier - ban the poison. Save millions of lives. We know what free methyl alcohol does. Get all that foolish propaganda off your web site.

As regards your email on methanol toxicity, it is exactly because we are concerned with ensuring there is a high-level of consumer protection that we have commissioned a new study on aspartame. You are also aware that the COT is looking at the metabolism and toxicity of methanol with a particular focus on low levels and/or chronic exposure to methanol including the sort of levels found in the diet.
In relation to the development and administration of the cereal bar, I recently informed you that the University of Hull is undertaking the study on behalf of the FSA. The cereal bar has been developed in conjunction with Campden BRI, an independent food and drink research facility.
