Someone recently asked if Sorbitol in gum was a safe sweetener. Usually I simply say it's a sugar alcohol known to cause bloating, diarrhea and gas. However, the Internet is full of more indepth articles on the sweetener and other problems such as this one: http://www.naturalnews.com/037813_sorbitol_cataracts_diabetics.html If you Google enough articles you will find deaths from too much of Sorbitol. What really concerns me is its added to gum with other sweeteners. On one Wrigley's page, now owned by Mars, is this list: Acesulfame, Aspartame, Maltitol, Sucralose, Sorbitol, and Xylitol. Here is the web site: http://www.wrigley.com/global/about-us/ingredients.aspx

So I went to Food Babe on their analysis of ingredients in gum:

"Wrigleys Doublemint Gum Artificial Colors, Artificial Flavors, Artificial GMO Sugars, Carcinogenic Sugars, Toxic Preservatives (Note This gum has sugar + corn syrup + Aspartame)

INGREDIENTS: SUGAR , GUM BASE , DEXTROSE , CORN SYRUP , NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS , LESS THAN 2% OF: GLYCEROL , ASPARTAME , GUM ARABIC , SOY LECITHIN , ACESULFAME K , COLOR , (TITANIUM DIOXIDE , BLUE 1 LAKE , BETA-CAROTENE) , BHT

Trident Gum Ingredients Artificial Colors, Artificial Flavorings, GMOs, Carcinogenic Sugars, Toxic Preservatives (Note: This gum has Xylitol + 3 other sugars including Aspartame)"

At this point consider aspartame is a multipotential carcinogen as proven in three studies by Dr. Morando Soffritti. It's a chemical poison and no one should use it ever, it’s cumulative. The formaldehyde converted from the free methyl alcohol embalms living tissue and damages DNA. Even lead scientist Dr. Adrian Gross and FDA toxicologist told Congress aspartame violated the Delaney Amendment because it caused cancer and the FDA should not have been able to set an allowable daily intake. No one will ever forget his last words, "And if the FDA violates its own laws who is left to protect the public?" Also Harvard Hospital claimed to have the longest and strongest study on aspartame and cancer but immediately apologized for publishing it saying it was weak, just exactly the opposite of what it said the day before. Shows you how quick industry gets to anyone making big news against their deadly chemical poison.

Next consider sucralose or Splenda. It started out as an insecticide. Dr. Soffritti also recently had his study peer reviewed and released it on the Internet showing it too is a carcinogen: http://www.mpwhi.com/sucralose_splenda.htm On this URL it even has an article on how Splenda is made. Acesulfame potassium caused cancer and leukemia in original studies. All these sweeteners violated the Delaney Amendment because they caused cancer.

Then there is Xylitol. The first thing people should know is never, never, never give it to a dog: When Xylitol is ingested by dogs it can cause a dangerous surge of insulin. At higher doses, Xylitol is believed toxic to the canine liver. Just three grams of Xylitol can kill a dog. It is genetically engineered: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S016816561300182X While a bit technical the point is: The microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been genetically engineered to produce Xylitol. A xylose reductase gene from Neurospora crassa was integrated into the chloroplast genome of C. reinhardtii. Codon-optimization and promoter selection were shown to improve Xylitol production. Does that sound appetizing to you? There is a study at Duke I've not been able to locate but no thank you I don't want anything with Xylitol.

Recently Ralph Walton, M.D., psychiatrist, who writes on aspartame because it triggers psychiatric and behavioral problems, told me no matter how gum is labeled, it all his aspartame in it.

I did discuss this problem with Mike Sylver now of "Just Like Sugar" who makes a sweetener of organic food and no chemicals. They have agreed to make a gum that is aspartame free. It should be available in about 6 months. After the information from Dr. Ralph Walton my only opinion is I wouldn't chew gum until this safe gum is on the market. How serious is it? Having been involved in several TV shows on one occasion we used an aspartame victim who had never ever used this toxin until she was handed a piece of sugarfree gum with aspartame. She immediately had a grand mal seizure. Aspartame is a seizure triggering drug and interacts with all anti-seizure medication. Here is the Aspartame Resource Guide: http://www.mpwhi.com/aspartame_resource_guide.htm It will give you more information.

Just Like Sugar's web site is http://www.justlikesugarinc.com Be sure to read the Just Like Sugar story. While they made the safe sweetener for us I have no financial association. I requested this because as soon as people get off aspartame they want to know what they can use. While many use Stevia and in one respect it’s okay if it’s pure with no other ingredients, Dr. Russell Blaylock (Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills - http://www.russellblaylockmd.com said it can cause hypoglycemia. In Brazil they add aspartame to stevia. The FDA once embargoed Stevia when we fought for it because aspartame is so deadly. Then Coke and Pepsi decided to use it and, of course, the FDA gave them permission without hesitation. Arthur Evangelista, who use to work for the FDA and left because of their corruption wrote about Coke's Truvia: http://qualityassurance.synthasite.com/truvia-sweetener---our-continuing-investigation.php Who did Coke work with to make Truvia? Cargill who makes fluoride. Fluoride is generated by aluminum, steel, fertilizer factories, coal burning power plants and in the production of glass and cement. Gaseous fluoride and other process waste byproducts have previously been allowed to be expelled through the factory smokestack New environmental regulation now require "scrubbers" atop of smokestacks to remove these toxic chemicals from escaping in the air. Truvia is Coke's version of stevia.

The main reason this article was written is because so many chew gum and have no idea how serious it is to use aspartame gum, it’s one of the most serious products. Dr. H. J. Roberts died a couple of years ago but he devoted 30 years of his life to warning about aspartame. He also as a diabetic specialist saw the victims in the trenches of medical practice. He said that not only could aspartame precipitate diabetes but it simulates and aggravates diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy, destroys the optic nerve, causes diabetics to go into convulsions and interacts with insulin. The free methyl alcohol causes diabetics to lose limbs. Because many believe aspartame has caused the diabetic epidemic and aspartame is pushed on them particularly by trade organizations that take money from the manufacturer and other industry who use the product, is another reason I sought help from someone who could make a safe sweetener that would not cause disability or death. Just Like Sugar is made from organic chicory which has been used for 70 years to improve the health of diabetics and also has organic orange peel.

If the excuse of manufacturers is they use these artificial sweeteners to get away from sugar, then why add sugar too?

Before Dr. Roberts died he wrote an excellent article on aspartame gum and anything absorbed from the mouth. Take the matter very seriously.

The Potential Hazard Of Aspartame Absorption From Within The Mouth

By H. J. Roberts, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.C.C.P.

Aspartame disease is being increasingly encountered in medical practice. (1-4) Over two-thirds of the population currently consumes the chemical aspartame, most commonly, as "diet" sodas and "sugar-free" products. I have detailed the serious neurological, psychiatric, metabolic, endocrine allergic and addictive aspects of this affliction. (1-5)

The widespread consumption of popular aspartame products that can be absorbed from the mouth and oropharynx should be cause for concern. They include gum, mouthwashes, chewable drugs and vitamins, and rectangular "mouth-freshener" strips placed on the tongue. Sugar-free mints are recommended for low-carbohydrate dieters who experience bad breath.

The prompt and predicable recurrence of symptoms (e.g., headache, dizziness, seizures, confusion, visual features, joint pain) on initial exposure or rechallenge to aspartame in this manner has been impressive. These issues are relevant.

Persons at high risk for aspartame reactions ought to be warned against using these products. They include pregnant women, children and patients with seizures, migraine, diabetes, hypoglycemia and weight disorders.
